I can't believe it's been since November that I last wrote. I think I'll be updating this a bit more so feel free to check in more often. Also Grant is helping me to re-vamp jentrance.com so stay tuned.

Here's the short version of what I've been up to. Grant and I met his family for Christmas and New Years in New Zealand. We spent about two weeks in Ohope beach (North Island) near Whakatane (the "wh" is pronounced "f' so it's fun to say). It was amazing... we spent the whole time trying to surf, swimming, and relaxing. At the end of the time we traveled through Rotorua, Waitomo and Auckland. Since then I've been working for a place called the Beachclub (www.thebeachclub.com.au). It's in a newer area of Melbourne called Docklands which is right on the water, so the views are spectacular. It's a restaurant, bar, and club all in one. Most of the people working there are also travelers so everyone is really fun to work with, and we've all become pretty good friends.

Today is Easter Sunday so I had the day off and I thought I would write a blog. It was about 24 degrees without a cloud in the sky. Pretty good for an autumn day. I went off to church, and when I got back Grant and I headed off to the Victoria Market. Conveniently located directly across from our building we are able to easily pick up some fruit and veggies and something for our picnic lunch. We walked up passed Federation Square and had a look at the Market over by the Art Gallery. Then we found a nice shady area in the park to sit and read. It was so relaxing. My mom bought me the book "The Secret" for my birthday. It's going to change my life.

Tonight Grant is going to see New Found Glory, and some of my friends are going to Asia Night at one of the clubs on Collins Street, but I think I might pass on that because I'm feeling quite lazy and I have a lot of cleaning to do for tomorrow. (besides the search for the new Pussy Cat Doll is on, and you all know how I love those skanky reality shows). Tomorrow Grant and I are hosting an Easter Potluck Dinner. Most of the people coming are Canadian, but for the few Ozzies and Kiwis we needed to explain what Potluck means. We have somehow managed to invite 30 people over to our small apartment so we will see how that goes. I'll get some pictures up here as soon as possible.

Speaking of pictures, you can check mine out here: http://flickr.com/photos/jentrance/

Cheers Mate!

Check soon for the next update.

Scenes from my life

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Well, Melbourne is definitely one of them. Thankfully the warm weather welcomed Sean and Amanda this weekend! Sean is a friend of mine from highschool who now lives with his girlfriend in Sydney. They were nice of us to put up with Audrey, Christin and I last year, so it was nice to re-pay them by inviting them to stay with me!

Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to spend a whole lot of time with Amanda as she spent most of her time on her “Bono Quest!” She’s a huge U2 fan and saw both shows in Melbourne… and on Sunday she finally got to meet Bono! Meanwhile, Sean and I explored the city. For the first time I felt like I was on vacation!

Somehow, the most exciting part for me was when we went to check out the rally against the G20 Summit that was being held in Melbourne. We left by the time the violence broke out, but for those of you who know me, I love being in the midst of the excitement! Here are a couple of pictures I took from the rally. (Sean picked a great shirt to wear that day)

Did I bring the weather with me?

Well I guess I must have brought the weather from Canada here to Australia... the last couple of days has been one of the coldest November days on record. It even snowed just outside the city which shocked everybody just two weeks before Summer.

On the weekend I was invited to celebrate my friend Sam's 21st birthday! In Australia the 21st birthday celebration is HUGE! She had the whole bar to herself and 60 of her closest friends... complete with appys and drinks and a great live musical performance! Her family gave a couple of great speeches, and even the birthday girl herself got up there and sang Drops of Jupiter! She's got an amazing voice! After we shut that place down we headed to a bar across the street and danced the night away. (don't worry, there was no judging after midnight)

Grant celebrated his 26th birthday this week! For his birthday we did something real special. We went to the Gaol. (aka Jail) I know it sounds silly, but seeing as Aussies are jail birds it seemed like the appropriate thing to do. We got to see Ned Kelly's death mask. Strange that A thief and murderer could become a national hero. Well I guess since they're all criminals....

just kidding!

Anyway, after the Gaol we headed over to Docklands, a newly developed waterfront area with many different restaurants to choose from. We picked Italian. We enjoyed some yummy pizza and a nice bottle of wine and then headed back to our apartment where some of our friends joined us for the delicious cake I got for Grant! (he had hinted to me previously where he wanted his cake from!)

Tomorrow Sean and Amanda (Sean is a friend from highschool) are flying in from Sydney for a visit. Well actually Amanda is here to visit U2, and I guess Sean is stuck with me! So we should be in for an interesting weekend!

Jen

(HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHOUT OUT TO MASEY!!!!!!!!!!!)

RIP Ed, Lavinia and Darth

RIP to our 3 beautiful fish. So with that said, I'm just going to report the highlights of the last month. So Grant and I found a great little apartment on the edge of the CBD, just across from the Victoria market (where we go buy all our fruits and veggies) and it's only a 10 minute walk from the Uni. We furnished it quite quickly...and quite cheaply. Our best buy was our black leather couch and matching chair for only $8.00!

We have been going to heaps of things like arts festival, fringe festival, Australian Idol, Final footy game, concerts, bars... it's been great.

As I learned last year, Australian's don't celebrate Hallowe'en. At all. Luckly we have some Canadian friends who decided to throw a party, complete with a pig roast, apple bobbing, and a great live band. Everyone dressed up. I found a great 80's prom dress from an op shop and made myself a sash and crimped my hair and went as Miss Canada 1985... Grant bought an old suit and ripped it all up and I put some make up on him so he looked dead. I must have worked because when we stepped out of our apartment there were some guys standing outside and when they saw Grant they said "aw man! you look like death." Except they sounded real serious! Anyway we had a great time at the party!

A couple of days ago we joined in the celebration of the biggest day in Melbourne... The Melbourne Cup. Some of you may remember me talking about it last year. Basically its a huge horse race that the whole city stops for. But it's a really fancy beer garden and it's as much about the fashion as it is about the horses. Women wear designer dresses and huge hats or fascinators (feathery clips you wear in your hair) and men wear their best suits (and pink ties). This year I made my own fascinator! But seriously though, I'm not gonna spend $100 on some ugly feathery thing I'll never wear again!

Of course in the middle of the worst drought Australia has had in over a thousand years, the weather decides to cloud over on Cup Day. It was far from fine. However the rain only lasted about a half an hour and held off for the rest of the day. Grant, Hamish and Sam and I hung around in the bar tent again as we did last year, and I managed to remember that champagne isn't really my friend! I put a bet on 2 horses and considering I had no idea what I was doing I was pretty lucky when they ended up coming in first and second. That's $110 more dollars in my pocket that I had before!

Anyway I know thats not a very exciting update but I will be updating more frequently now so keep checking back!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jentrance.blogspot.com/2006/11/pad-halloween-cup.html' title='The Pad, Halloween & Having three times the population of Vancouver, Melbourne is a city full of trams, jay-walking, and crazy fashion. It’s also a place where the weather has even a harder time making up its mind than I do.

This place is somehow magical to me.  It sparkles with life and culture.  In the last week alone I have hopped from tram to tram within the bustle of every day chaos… I’ve sipped on a flat white outside a café along the Eupoean style cobbled street of Hardware Lane…  relaxed along the white sands of St. Kilda beach… strolled past the many frui<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;
My flight over here was probably the longest ever. I arrived in LA at about 6:30pm to find out that my plane was delayed, and was now leaving at 1:45am. Lucky for me I ended up meeting two handsome guys from Sydney and we all hung out together. <img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Anyway, the two guys Jamie and Jonathan end up falling asleep and finally I wonder why they haven’t called us to board yet, so I wander over to our gate to find it completely empty and they are paging our names over the loudspeaker. The girl was like “hurry! You’re the last to board!” So I ran over and woke the guys up and thankfully we made the flight!

Luckily I ended up sleeping a full 9 hours to Auckland (Aud- it was like the Thai flight, I just slept and ate) So I arrive in Auckland to find that now because of the previous delay I have actually missed my flight to Melbourne. So… I now have to wait another 7 hours. This time I met a Rochelle, a girl from Melbourne who was on the same flight so we hung out together. You really get to know someone after 7 hours straight… and she was a lot of fun, so hopefully we will meet up again sometime here.

Finally, after 32 hours of travelling, or just waiting, I arrived in Melbourne. I was greeted by Grant and an armful of flowers… For the first two weeks here he arranged accommodation at the Graduate house at his school Melbourne Uni. It’s in a nice area and we have a big balcony that overlooks a park.

On Saturday Grant organized a dinner at Federation Square where I was able to meet all his friends (including one of mine – Jeremy who I went to highschool with). Everyone was really friendly and dinner was great. I’ve also been able to catch up with my friend Hamish (aka Hammy). He is a Kiwi that lives here… I met him while in Venice and last year he showed Christin, Audrey and I a great time! I went out with him and his friends the other night to play Trivia (apparently the thing to do around here on a Tuesday night). Our team won, and his friends made fun of my accent. I have an accent?

Anyway, most of the week has been spent looking for apartments.Something I’ve never had to do before. Very exciting and very stressful. But yesterday we found a place, applied and while we were browsing the food section in Myer, they called and said we were approved. Good ol’ L.J. Hooker. It’s a one bedroom, but it’s very roomy and the apartment is quite new. It’s on the 6th floor. It has a sketchy little balcony, but a balcony nonetheless, and right across the street is Victoria Market (where we can do all our shopping) and at night it has a great view of all the city lights. We are right between downtown and the Uni (about 10 min walking either direction) so it is perfect!

We did some shopping today at Ikea, The Big W, and The Reject Store. Haha. I’m not gonna lie, we’re trying to be as cheap as possible! It was difficult, but I was able to deter Grant away from the Jim Beam Dunna. (although I did consider buying it for Audrey!) We move in on Tuesday so we are trying to gather up some stuff before than.

Tomorrow a bunch of us are going to see Talladaga Nights, and then heading back to our friend Tyler’s for a BBQ… then for the weekend we are going down to another friends cabin on the beach which should be a lot of fun!

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I enjoy hearing from everyone so please email me! Also if anyone is planning on visiting Melbourne give us a ring and I’m sure you will be able to crash on our floor! I have a mobile now (thanks Hammy & Sam) so email me for the number!
    Love, Jen

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Can you believe this was the 10th ACF I've been to? For those of you who do not know what Arts County Fair is it is a huge concert/beer garden that happens every year on the last day of classes at UBC. The first year I went with Rochelle. I was 17 and she was 16 and at first we felt so out of place, but by the end we were having a blast. I've gone every year since then... usually the day is filled with lots of drinks, some background music, losing your friends and random encounters. This year, however... I managed to NOT lose my friends! Indy & I bussed down to UBC, made a stop at the frat house for a bit... and then proceeded to Thunderbird Stadium.

We had a good time there, but the best part of the day was when I ran into my friends Lena & Danielle. I decided to leave with them and headed to my old stomping ground... the notorious P.I.T. So this was my favorite part of the day... my friend Lena is in a super-turbo automatic wheelchair, so Danielle hopped on her lap, and I climbed aboard the back and held on as we zoomed past everyone across campus. It was so funny, people were laughing at us and we couldn't stop laughing... I'm surprised I didn't fall off! We ended up also zooming past the line-up at the PIT and hung out there for no more than an hour, when Darcy picked me up (THANK U) and took me to the Hilton for some food and lots and lots of water.

Last Sunday, Sparky, Audrey and I went to see Hawthorn Heights, All-American Rejects, and Fallout Boy. It was a pretty good show, although I prefer smaller venues. Audrey and I amused ourselves in between bands by watching people continuously tripping over a bump on the floor. Fallout Boy put on a pretty entertaining show... including spins & spits, fire balls, jumping into the crowd etc...

Other than that, I've just been working my two jobs trying to save up some money. I'm also taking a photography course at Focal Point once a week! I've only had 2 classes so far but I'm really enjoying it! Here are a couple of photos I took last week:

Well I just wanted to say HAPPY EASTER to everyone!!!! I'm old. I was talking to this girl today who is still in highschool and she says "So you like graduated a long time ago right? Are you married?" Poor girl almost ran away when she saw the look on my face. Why am I more bitter about this than usual? Because I just had another birthday. I am now 26. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

My birthday week was actually quite eventful. The Saturday before my birthday I had people over that I had been really close with in highschool for some drinks and it was really nice to see everyone. The next day I had to work in the moring along with 5 other really hung over girls. That night I had a games & wine night with Grant's friends from highschool. I'm trying to steal them away from Grant while he's gone! Muhahahaha!

It was also my parents birthday that weekend (yes, weird I know they were born on the same day) so there was plenty of ice cream cake to go around! My actual birthday was on Wednesday and it was perfect! My girls picked me up and we went and got Lychee bo ba nie saw. aka LYCHEE BUBBLE TEA! YUM! YUM! Then we went downtown to my friend's place and watched Top Model! woo hoo! haha! (we could also watch the firemen across the street! also yum yum!)

The next day I went and donated blood for the second time! I was so brave and went all by myself! I really recommending it to anyone! They ask you some funky questions (ie. Have you ever had sex with a guy who's had sex with a guy before 1977? etc) but the good news is you get free cookies!

Then this last friday we went to the Roxy to celebrate Sarah's birthday! It was a lot of fun, lots of people came out which was cool... unfortunately I didn't get too much dancing in :(

Anyway I'll post some pix up for your enjoyment.

Anyone going to Arts County Fair this year? Speaking of old, this will be my 10th year going. Holy CRAP

*JENNY*

PS. There are pictures posted from this week in the photographs section!

PPS. I hung up my world map again yesterday and put all the pins in the places I've been. I decided I wanted to take a picture of it. But when I looked at the picture I realized I had captured something more than just the map... Is it a ghost?? My mom & I think it's my Granny. What do you think? Look Closely.

There are times when I feel I was born in the wrong generation. Friday night was one of those times. We went to the Croatian Cultural Center to check out Relient K and Rocket Summer. I had seen both bands before. We had stumbled upon Rocket Summer last year in Seattle when they were touring with Jamison Parker, Huston Calls & Hellogoodbye. With his passion, energy & upbeat music, Bryce captured my attention immediately. I had seen Relient K at last years Warped Tour. At the time I had already put some of their songs on my ipod, but no one else had heard of them before, so I ended up watching them on my own.

This is the problem with my generation. When we were younger, we found out about good music because we would hear it on the radio. Today's youth find their favorite music in different ways. They find it through music websites like myspace and purevolume, they download it, and they send it to each other over instant messaging. People my age have the mindset that if it's not on the radio, it's not good music. I can't tell you how many times I've played non-mainstream music for my friends and they totally disregard it... until they hear it on the radio, and then the next thing you know it's their favorite new band. For instance, now my friends are all talking about this new band called Fall Out Boy, and I'm like "dude, I told you about that band a year ago!" Before, they had just classified it as my "emo shit" & ignored it.

Anyways, to get back to the point, since the friends I went with were not interested in getting up close for the show, I ran off with Bella (a myspace chick/ RA fan) & Bella, her friends & I pushed our way through a crowd of already sweaty youth till we got close to the stage. The crowd was pushing before the band was even up on stage & I there I am squashed amongst hundreds of sweaty teens, and I'm thinking "am I too old to be here?" And just then, the band starts and it doesn't matter because we are all there for the same reason. We are all there for good times & good tunes. We are all moving as one, we are all jumping, we all have our arms in the air, we are all singing the lyrics as if they are our own and we are loving it. Poor Bella loses her contact and we all fall down but there are hands to pick us back up, and we are back up & dancing, jumping, screaming, singing! Bryce is apparently enjoying the crowd's enthusiasm as he jumps into the crowd and surfs over us... hands everywhere, reaching out. The actions of the crowd is echoing his lyrics and we "dance until we just can't, clappin our hands to the songs & keep dancin around to the joyful sound that the band plays..." It is a possibility that I am one of the oldest people in the crowd, but it doesn't matter, this is for me too.

After the show Bryce is at the merch booth, and like the groupie I am I line up with a bunch of 15 year olds, I go say hi, good show & we have our picture taken.

I decide to get a different concert view for Relient K. This time I hang out at the back of the crowd near all the parents leaning against the wall. Perhaps this is more my age group? The band opens up with Happy Birthday for Matt. Then they break into their song about the 80's and the kids go nuts, and I turn to Sparky and we wonder if half these kids were even around in the 80's. Their performance was surprisingly entertaining, including their salute to Top Gun playing songs like "Highway to the Danger Zone" and "Take my Breath Away." Near the end as they played one of their slower, more religious songs, lights were held high and began to sway in the audience. I look around me and cannot help but laugh. The kids in the audience are not holding up lighters. I am surrounded by kids who are holding up their cell phones! Held high and open, with the light it produces swaying from side to side. I step back and I smile. Times have changed so much. These kids are growing up in such a technical age. Today they discover music in ways we could not even fathom twenty years ago. Music may change in genre, in style, and form, but one thing is for certain. Music will always continue to bring people together no matter what your age is. To dance. To sing. To live in the moment. & to leave us breathless and satisfied... and usually with a slight ringing in the ears.

NEW ZEALAND PIX ARE NOW UP!

woot! woot!

I know you have all been waiting for them. Thanks to Grant for helping his computer-illiterate girlfriend!

So I've had quite a few people over the last couple of days ask me this question: "Why are your Australia and New Zealand pictures set to private?" No, it is not because I had such a wild and crazy time I have to keep the pictures secret... although I will have to edit some out because I did manage to capture people getting sneaky dabs on film. The reason for my secrecy is because I have SO many pictures that it is taking me a while to upload them, and I don't want to reveal them until they are all up! Also, I am trying to reduce the file size of each one because taking thousands of pix on the highest quality on a 8 megapixel camera will really take up a lot of space! So with that said, the quality of the pictures on the site may not be that great, some even a little pixely... but if anyone I traveled with would like me to send them any pictures with the original quality just let me know! I have posted up here my favorite picture from the trip. It is a sunset taken in Haast New Zealand when we were heading to the beach to roast some scumfadoozas over the campfire! I just got this one blown up today and some guy who does watercolor paintings wants to paint it. Sweet-as!

ANYWAY... can u believe it is 2006? Holy crap! Grant Sparky & I spent New Years Eve together... started the party at Cam & Janine's place and then headed to Grant's friend Morgan's place in Richmond. That was pretty fun... until I just saw white... but that's another story. It's great bringing in the New Years with good friends! The next morning we had our annual breakfast at ABC and then headed down to the Polar Bear swim where Jacquie, Christin, & her sister Carol were brave enough to participate in!

This past week has been pretty entertaining as well. Grant and I played squash the other day. HAHA. That game is so fun. Grant tries to teach me that it's all in the wrist and I don't have to wind up and hit the ball. Apparently I don't follow directions very well... he said I looked like a mad-woman chopping down bushes... he said "I should give you a machete and put you in the rainforest." Audrey compared it to when 50 random people jumped into freezing cold water and started frantically swimming towards dolphins. GTs. Oh ya, I forgot I learned on New Years that the things I think are funny are not funny to anybody else so ignore this last paragraph. :P

Friday night I crashed the Hilton's Christmas party... well George was my date, but he hadn't showered in 5 days so I didn't get too close. We had a great dinner and I was very happy when Darcy won the trip to Vegas... he deserved it more than anybody! The theme this year was Vegas so they had fake money and all sorts of tables... blackjack, poker etc. Sylvain and I tried to win the dance competition again this year but I kept my shoes on this time probably not a good idea because when he tried to spin me I slipped and bailed! haha... then because we are the Hilton crew we headed over to the dew and shut that place down as usual. I gotta admit I miss working with everyone there... we always had such great fun together!

Saturday night we headed down to Roosters for Luke & Amish's bday. WHAT A GONG SHOW that was! haha. I drove and we followed their big ass limo the whole way. I really had no idea how I was going to find my way home! We arrived super early but avoided the line, and got to watch the end of the Canucks game. Most of us felt a little bit out of place, but Luke fit in quite well with his HUGE belt buckle ("can you take it all in?"), cowboy hat (that he ended up losing somewhere along the way) and Old Navy plaid button up shirt (which he proudly cut the sleeves off himself)! It didn't take long before the shirt was un-buttoned (it happens every year) and he was dancing up a storm. Amish seemed to hold it together quite nicely, but I think that shot of tequila that Audrey bought him put him over the edge because by the end of the night he was throwing water on everyone! It was nice to see everyone... some people I hadn't seen in a while... including Courtney and Danielle. I'm not a huge fan of country myself... but I did manage to recognize a few songs I liked that were fun to dance to. Then Audrey and I requested our favorite country song and when it came on we danced and sang at the top of our lungs in honor of our STRAY friends... that's right folks "She thinks my tractor's sexy!" Good times! By the time we left 3 of my friends (I won't name names) had been kicked out and were puking by the curb! Thankfully, Eileen and Trevor caught a ride home with me... & Trevor gave me directions or else I never would have found my way back to Richmond!

In other news Remember August plays this Friday Jan 13th at South Arm Community Center, so come check them out. It is sure to be an excellent show as always and it may be their last one for a while. Which leads me to my next topic of news... Grant is moving to Melbourne, Australia next month. He was accepted to do his Masters at the University of Melbourne and he will spend the next 18 months there. He has asked me to join him there, and the offer has been very tempting as it was my favorite city in Australia. He found out the news while I was away so I've been thinking about it for a while now. Although I'm sure I will join him there at some point there are a lot of decisions I have to make before the details can be drawn out.

Anyway let me know what you think of the new site! Grant also has a brand new site,
grantmckenzie.com. There is a link to it on the right!

<3 Jen
